Pete Walton

Managing Partner & Lead Portfolio Architect

Pete had a unique upbringing around the world. The son of a naval officer, he lived in or visited Virginia Beach, Guam, the Philippines, South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Hawaii, and several other US states. The diversity of cultures he experienced helped form a better understanding of differences in people. A thorough and empathetic perspective became the base from which he built a platform of service to others.

One of the most defining moments in his life was surviving the volcanic eruption of Mount Pinatubo in June 1991 in the Philippines. This event taught him how fragile life is and how important it is to help others, especially when we are able and others are not. Living without common utilities of life, like running water, electricity and a consistent source of food, in a toxic atmosphere (literally) brings a sense of humility very quickly. This humility and a fervent belief in education are why he loves what he does now.

His father retired from the Navy and his family settled in Columbia, S.C. He spent the next several years attending Hammond School and graduated in 1998. He set his sights on N.C. He graduated from Elon University with a B.S. in Marketing and Finance in 2003. Earning his M.B.A. from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business was a life-long dream that he accomplished in 2009.

His affinity for numbers and math made the financial services industry a natural fit. More narrowly focused, he began building portfolios for high net-worth individuals at Morgan Stanley. Faced with a moral dilemma, he wanted to align his personal and professional values, goals and philosophy with the people who mattered most: his clients. Moving to the Independent side of the business was the most rewarding transition he has ever experienced professionally.

He continues his passion building portfolios as the Lead Portfolio Architect at Traverse Partners. With a risk-based approach, he has developed a new methodology for active investment management. Continual improvement and education are critical traits for Pete and he loves teaching his clients different concepts that are essential to their financial success.

Pete lives in Concord, NC, with his wife Bethany and their three children. He enjoys competing in Ironman triathlons, cheering on the Virginia Tech Hokies in college football and woodworking. He stays active in the community by coaching youth athletics, attending Davidson United Methodist church and volunteering at various running and cycling events throughout the year.
